In japanese you don’t say…. sake!

In western culture, we call sake the “liquor” that is served in Japanese restaurants or taverns. This term actually, litterally translated from japanese language has the meaning of “alcoholic drink”.So with this word we refer to a generic alcoholic liquid with no distinction in between the different kinds. Japanese people call this specific drink “nihonshu“. Nihonshu drink is not a spirit. It’s a japanese liquor or “rice wine”, obtained by the fermentation of rice and koji. It’s alcohol content stays in between 12 and 16 %. Just like for the wine, the shades of this liquor can be very different and special. Different sake qualities can depend a lot on the processing and refining of the rice involved, and it can be drank both hot or cold.
